Mildred Omari Cheche has become one of the most influential figures in Kenyan women’s football after guiding the Kenya Under-17 women’s national football team, the Junior Starlets,that will be playing in FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifications 2026 in Morocco.
Cheche made history after leading Kenya to qualify following a convincing 5-1 aggregate victory over South Africa.
She becomes the first Kenyan coach to guide a national football team to two FIFA World Cup appearances.
Her achievement followed her earlier success in 2024 when she helped the Junior Starlets secure Kenya’s first-ever qualification for a FIFA women’s World Cup tournament.
She was born in Nairobi and grew up in Huruma and Kariobangi estates.
The coach who talked to DNK-International said that she was raised in a family of six girls, where she was the fifth born.
Her love for football started at a young age when she joined the renowned Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) development programme at only seven years old.
The grassroots environment shaped her passion for the game and later influenced her decision to develop young football talent.
Cheche who is in her mid 30’s has built a career that combines football, education, leadership and youth development.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Kiriri Women’s University and is also an alumni of the Mandela Washington Fellowship programme, having participated in the 2017 class.
She further holds a CAF B coaching licence, a qualification that has helped her rise through the ranks of football management.
Before becoming a coach, Cheche was a talented footballer.
She developed her skills at MYSA, where she played for several years before featuring for women’s teams including Mathare United Women and Ministry of Youth and Sports Women FC.
Playing mainly as a forward, she gained first hand experience of the challenges facing women footballers in Kenya.
However her playing career was cut short by a serious leg injury, forcing her to shift her focus from playing to coaching.
After retiring as a player, Cheche began her coaching journey through grassroots football programmes, using her experience to mentor young girls.
She worked with MYSA youth teams and later gained coaching experience at Peponi International School, where she handled sports development.
She also coached MYSA’s Under-14 girls team, including guiding the team during international youth competitions such as the Norway Cup.
Her work in developing young players earned her recognition and eventually opened the door to national football team.
In January 2024, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) appointed her head coach of the Junior Starlets while also naming her assistant coach of the senior Harambee Starlets team.
Cheche’s coaching philosophy is built around discipline, teamwork, player development and giving young girls confidence to compete at the highest level.
She believes investment in women’s football can transform the lives of many young players and create opportunities for future generations.
She described her historic World Cup qualification in 2024 as a “game changer” for Kenyan women’s football, saying the achievement showed what was possible through hard work, dedication and support for the women’s game.
Among the people who have influenced Cheche’s journey are grassroots football mentors, coaches and the MYSA football development system that gave her an early platform.
She has often credited the players, technical bench, football authorities and supporters for the success achieved by the Junior Starlets.
Beyond coaching, Cheche is also passionate about social transformation through sport.
She has been involved in programmes aimed at nurturing young talent and empowering girls through football.
Cheche has also participated in international coaching development programmes, including FIFA mentorship initiatives designed to strengthen women’s football leadership.
Despite becoming a national sporting icon, Cheche keeps much of her personal life private.
Information about her marital status and family life has not been publicly disclosed, as she has largely focused public attention on football development and her professional achievements.
Her journey from a young girl playing football in Nairobi’s estates to becoming a record breaking national team coach represents a remarkable rise in Kenyan sport.
Cheche’s achievements is now viewed as a symbol of possibility for young Kenyan girls who dream of making a career in football.
Her legacy continues to grow as she leads the Junior Starlets into a new era, proving that with proper investment, Kenyan women’s football can compete on the global stage.
