Netflix drama The Polygamist sparks debate

Netflix’s new South African drama The Polygamist is keeping viewers glued to their screens as it continues to dominate online conversations. The 22-episode series premiered on June 12 and has quickly become one of the platform’s most talked-about titles.

The story follows Jonas, a wealthy construction tycoon whose death opens the door to a deeper look at the secrets, betrayals and family tensions that shaped his life. Adapted from Sue Nyathi’s 2012 novel, the series is set in a South African context and has been praised for its strong performances and cinematic style.

At the centre of the drama is Jonas’s complicated relationship with the women in his life, including his first wife Joyce and another woman, Essie, whose sacrifices and disappointments drive much of the emotional conflict. The show explores marriage, power, infidelity and family expectations, themes that have resonated strongly with audiences across Africa.

Social media has been flooded with reactions, with viewers debating the decisions of the characters and the moral lessons in the series. Produced by Stained Glass Productions, the team behind Uzalo and The Wife, the show has been described as a premium drama with layered storytelling rather than a traditional telenovela.
