NAROK, Kenya — Police officers in Narok County were forced to tactically withdraw from Mogoto Village in Sagamian Location after a mob turned against them while they attempted to rescue a suspect accused of murder.
According to a police incident report from Tendwet Police Station, officers led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), accompanied by the area chief, travelled to Mogoto Village on Saturday following reports of a murder.
Upon arrival, the officers found villagers had cornered the alleged murder suspect and were reportedly subjecting him to mob justice.
The officers attempted to intervene and rescue the suspect, but the crowd allegedly overpowered them and began pelting the OCS and his team with stones.
Police officers fired several shots into the air in an attempt to disperse the crowd, but the tactic failed to restore order.
The officers were subsequently forced to scramble for safety and tactically withdraw from the scene.
During the confrontation, the OCS reportedly lost a magazine for a Jericho pistol containing seven rounds of ammunition. He also sustained injuries to both hands and legs after being struck by stones.
The OCS was treated and later discharged in fair condition.
Another officer, Corporal George Onchangwa, was struck by a stone on the left eye and was also reported to be in fair condition.
Police said the situation remained tense as investigations continued and efforts were made to restore order in the area.
