Three men have been hospitalised after allegedly consuming suspected fungicide that they had mistaken for muratina, a traditional alcoholic brew, during a customary dowry ceremony in Kwa Chui area, Gathanji, Nyandarua County.
The incident occurred on Saturday at about 2.30pm and was reported to Huhoini Police Station by Silibwet Assistant Chief Josephine.
The three victims were identified as Alex Wachira, Martin Kinyanjui and Issack Muchucha.
Police reports indicate that the men consumed the substance from a plastic energy drink bottle, believing it contained muratina that had been used during the previous day’s dowry ceremony.
Following the incident, the three reportedly developed symptoms associated with poisoning and were rushed to Charity Private Hospital in Nyahururu, where they were treated and admitted in stable condition.
Police officers led by the Officer Commanding Huhoini Police Station, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and local administration officials, visited the scene.
