Tension gripped Makutano Shopping Centre in Sololo Marsabit County today after more than 1,200 residents staged demonstrations and barricaded the busy Marsabit–Moyale road.

The protesters were demanding the release of their leaders.

According to a police report, the protesters comprised men, women, youths, and mothers carrying babies, all believed to be residents of Makutano and Sololo areas.

The demonstrators reportedly blocked the highway while chanting “Release Our People,” causing disruption of transport along the key route linking Marsabit and Moyale.

Police officers drawn from Makutano and Sololo police stations, under the command of the OCPD Sololo, were deployed to clear the road and restore normal traffic flow.

Additional reinforcement officers from Moyale and Turbi were also brought in to disperse the protesters.
