A major security scare has rocked Kitale Police Station after a police firearm loaded with ammunition was stolen by a suspected impostor who posed as a newly transferred officer.
According to a police incident report filed at the station yesterday night, the suspect arrived at the station’s main gate dressed in a police raincoat and introduced himself to officers on duty as a newly posted officer from Eldoret Police Station.
The man reportedly engaged the officers in a brief conversation, claiming he had been directed to report to Corporal Jeremiah Rotich and was looking for accommodation within the police lines.
After gaining the officers’ trust, the suspect allegedly requested to be shown a nearby hotel where he could buy food.
Police Constable Ishmael Kimutai agreed to escort him.
While heading to the hotel, the suspect allegedly convinced the officer to assist him in carrying his rifle loaded with 25 rounds of ammunition.
Moments later, upon reaching nearby shops, the suspect is said to have boarded a waiting motorcycle and escaped towards Kitale town with the firearm.
The report further states that the officer did not immediately raise alarm or notify his senior officer, Corporal Rotich, until after the suspect had disappeared.
The OCS immediately deployed teams to trace and recover the stolen firearm.
Following the incident, three officers who were on duty at the station’s main gate were placed in custody pending investigations.
They include Corporal Jeremiah Rotich, Police Constable Ishmael Kimutai and Police Constable Cornelius Kiplimo.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Trans Nzoia West have launched investigations into the incident.
