By Our Correspondent,Gikomba

Two people have been confirmed dead after a fire damaged building collapsed at Nairobi’s Gikomba Open Air Market on Thursday.

Several people are believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.

According to a police incident report from Shauri Moyo Police Station, the building, located in Block B of the market, had been severely weakened during the devastating Gikomba market fire that occurred last Sunday.

The structure reportedly gave way as a group of street children scavenged for scrap metal inside the remains of the building.

Police officers who rushed to the scene established that two people died instantly, while an unknown number of other victims were trapped beneath the debris.

The Nairobi County Disaster Rescue Team immediately launched a rescue operation and continues to clear the rubble in search of survivors and additional victims.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to Nairobi City Mortuary, where they await identification and post-mortem examinations.
