A bee attack has claimed the lives of twin toddler girls in Rachuonyo South, Homa Bay County, after a swarm of wild bees descended on a family homestead.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Kobala Village, Kawino Sub-location, where neighbours had gathered to shell maize at the home of Tom Mose.
According to police, the swarm of wild bees suddenly emerged from a nearby mango tree and attacked the group, forcing everyone to flee for safety.
When the bees eventually dispersed and residents returned, it was discovered that the toddlers, who had been at the homestead with their mothers, had sustained severe bee stings.
The victims, identified as two and a half year old twin sisters Mary Laura and Valleta Sharif, were rushed to Nyang’iela Level 4 Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.
Another toddler, Precious Tasha, aged one and a half years, was also injured in the attack.
She was taken to Hawi Private Hospital, where she received treatment and was later discharged in fair condition.
Several adults sustained minor injuries.
Police officers from Nyang’iela Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) visited the scene and documented the incident.
The bodies of the twins, which had visible bee sting marks on their faces and bodies, were moved to the Rachuonyo County Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
