Woman rescued alive from a pit latrine in Kilifi

A woman aged 32 is fighting for her life after being rescued from a pit latrine in Kadzunini village, Kilifi in what police have classified as an attempted suicide incident.

According to a report filed at Kijipwa Police Station yesterday,the incident was first brought to their attention by community a policing member Anthony Mwangome Kavumbi.

Preliminary investigations established that the woman, identified as Janet Mutsunga Nyamawi, had left her home in the early hours of April 27 at around 1:30 a.m., informing her husband, Baraka Peru, that she was stepping out briefly. She did not return, prompting a search by family and villagers that yielded no results.

The breakthrough came two days later yesterday morning when the girl,Lona Elisha, discovered the victim.

The girl had gone to use the same pit latrine when she heard faint sounds from inside.

She quickly alerted her parents, who mobilized villagers.

Residents worked together to dig into the latrine and successfully pull the woman out alive, though in critical condition.

She was immediately rushed to Kilifi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where she is currently receiving emergency medical care.

Police noted that the victim has no known history of mental illness.
