Police in Rongo,Migori County have recovered a massive consignment of drugs with a street value of Sh34 Million from a trailer that had plunged into River Kuja.
According to police at Kamagambo Police Station, the accident occurred on April 22 involving a trailer.
The vehicle veered off the road and sank into the river, prompting a multi-day recovery operation.
The retrieval exercise was successfully concluded yesterday at around 11:00am, when the trailer was pulled out of the river and towed to Kamagambo Police Station.
Upon opening the container, officers discovered a huge quantity of a substance suspected to be cannabis sativa (bhang).
Anti-narcotics officers from Isebania were immediately called to the scene and took over investigations.
Police confirmed that a total of 1,137.8 kilograms of bhang, with an estimated street value of Sh 34,134,000, was recovered.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Samson Ayiera Chacha 52, sustained injuries during the accident and is currently admitted at Migori County Referral Hospital.
Police have placed him under arrest, and he remains under guard pending his discharge, after which he will be formally charged.
The recovered consignment has been secured, with officers guarding the container as investigations continue under the Anti-Narcotics Unit in Isebania.
