James Orengo’s Long Political Journey Resurfaces Amid Fresh ODM Power Struggles

By Our Reporter,Kisumu

Siaya Governor James Orengo has once again found himself at the center of national political discourse, with renewed attention on his decades long career, ideological battles, and recent developments within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Orengi was born on February 22, 1951 and remains one of Kenya’s most enduring figures in opposition politics.

He studied law at the University of Nairobi, where he joined in the early 1970’s and earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree.

During his university years, he became deeply involved in student leadership and activism, which laid the foundation for his future political engagements.

Orengo first entered Parliament in 1980 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Ugenya, marking the beginning of a political career defined by defiance and reformist ideals.

His early years in politics were marked by frequent clashes with the government of the day, leading to multiple arrests and detention without trial.

At one point, sustained political pressure forced him into self exile in Tanzania, where he continued his activism from abroad.

A key figure in Kenya’s pro-democracy movement of the 1980’s and 1990’s, Orengo was among those who agitated for the repeal of Section 2A of the Constitution, which restored multiparty democracy.

He remained a steadfast ally of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga during the formation of the FORD-Kenya, standing firmly with him during internal wrangles that defined the party’s early years.

Following Jaramogi’s death in 1994, Orengo’s political path diverged from that of Raila Odinga.

He sided with Michael Kijana Wamalwa in the contest for control of FORD-Kenya, a move that placed him at odds with Raila for a period.

However, the two later reconciled and reunited under the ODM banner, where Orengo became one of Raila’s most loyal allies, supporting his presidential bids and political agenda over the years.

Orengo also pursued his own presidential ambitions in 2002 under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), though his bid did not gain significant traction.

He later transitioned to the Senate, being elected as the first Senator for Siaya County in 2013 following the promulgation of the new Constitution.

He successfully defended the seat in 2017, consolidating his influence in regional and national politics.

In 2022, Orengo was elected as the Governor of Siaya County, marking his shift from legislative to executive leadership within devolved government.

In recent developments, Orengo has reportedly differed with Oburu Oginga over leadership direction within ODM, signaling emerging fault lines in the party.

He has thrown his support to the “Linda Mwananchi” movement led by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, which has been pushing for internal reforms and a redefinition of the party’s grassroots engagement.

Orengo has been named by the group as acting ODM party chairman, with endorsements made publicly during weekend rallies in Vihiga and Kisumu.

While these claims point to a possible shift in ODM’s internal power dynamics, the party’s official position on the matter remains unclear.

Political analysts suggest that if such developments gain traction, ODM could face internal divisions that may weaken its cohesion ahead of future elections.

At the same time, Orengo’s emergence in a more assertive leadership role could energize reformist factions within the party, potentially reshaping its direction.

Orengo is married to Betty Kaari Murungi,a renowned advocate, human rights expert, and a former commissioner of Kenya’s Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC).She is also a recognized scholar.

He continues to command respect as a seasoned lawyer and his legacy is closely tied to the country’s struggle for democracy, constitutionalism, and civil liberties.

As ODM navigates this latest phase, Orengo’s next moves and how the party leadership responds are likely to have significant implications for Kenya’s opposition politics in the coming days.
