DCI) officers attached to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) have arrested a police officer in Nairobi’s Ngara area over links to ivory smuggling.

Sergeant John Leserewa of the Central Police Station who is currently attached to the Samburu County Government, was apprehended at a city hotel yesterday while in company of an accomplice identified as Khalid Maishassan Osman.

During the raid, the undercover officers recovered four cut pieces of elephant ivory trophies with estimated street value of approximately Sh 550,000.

The two suspects are currently being held at the Langata Police Station and are expected to be arraigned in court to face charges of dealing in endangered wildlife trophies contrary to Section 92(2) of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013.

The arrest according to investigators underscores the ongoing efforts by the state security agencies in battling illegal ivory trade that threatens Kenya’s iconic elephant population.
