Mike Amwayi “Ocheche”,”Computer”:The left footed legend soccer player

By Xavier Lugaga,Busia.

In the rich history of Kenyan football, few names evoke the romance of wing play quite like Mike Amwayi.

Fondly known as “Ocheche” or “Computer,” Amwayi was not just a footballer, he was a spectacle.

At a time when the game thrived on individuality and daring expression, he transformed the left flank into a corridor of imagination, pace, and precision.

Emerging in the early 1980’s, Amwayi belonged to a generation that defined flair in Kenyan football.

His style was unmistakable, a blistering runner with a cultured left foot, capable of delivering inch perfect crosses or unleashing thunderous strikes from impossible angles.

Watching him glide down the wing was to witness a kind of football poetry ,spontaneous, inventive, and devastatingly effective.

His journey began at Kakamega High School, where he dazzled for the legendary “Green Commandos” under coach Chris Makokha.

Even in those formative years, it was evident that Amwayi was no ordinary talent.

He dictated matches from the flank with a maturity beyond his age, combining intelligence with instinct in a way that set him apart from his peers.

In 1982, he made the leap to AFC Leopards from MOTCOM, stepping into one of the most storied clubs in East Africa.

At “Ingwe”, he found himself among giants of the game, including J.J. Masiga and Wilberforce Mulamba.

This golden generation propelled the club to regional glory, notably conquering the CECAFA Club Championship.

Within that constellation of stars, Amwayi shone brightly, his pace terrifying defenders, his creativity igniting the terraces.

His brilliance could not be confined to club football alone.

In 1985, he earned his call up to Harambee Stars, joining a competitive setup where the left wing was hotly contested, particularly by Ambrose Ayoyi.

Yet Amwayi’s discipline, technical finesse, and unwavering work ethic ensured he carved out his own space, earning admiration from team mates and supporters alike.

Then came the cruel twist that so often shadows sporting greatness.

In 1986, during a clash against FC Kalamu, a serious injury brought his soaring momentum to an abrupt halt.

Two years on the sidelines followed years that might have otherwise seen him ascend to even greater heights.

Though he returned and continued playing into the early 1990’s, the injury left an indelible mark, reshaping the trajectory of a career that had promised boundless peaks.

Yet, if adversity tested him, it never defined him.

Decades later, Amwayi’s bond with football remains unbroken.

As of 2026, he still turns out for Paradiso in the Wazee Wa Kazi Premier League, a remarkable testament to enduring passion and resilience.

Few players sustain such a lifelong connection to the game, and fewer still do so with the same quiet dignity that has come to define him.

Today, Mike Amwayi stands as more than a former player,he is a living archive of Kenyan football’s golden era.

His legacy is etched not only in trophies and appearances, but in the memories of those who watched him,the sudden burst down the wing, the curling cross, the roar of the crowd.

He was, and remains, artistry in motion, the man who made the left wing come alive.
