A Belgian tourist on holiday in Kenya has reported the theft of cash amounting to 5,000 Euros, approximately Sh752,000, from his residence in Mtwapa after his house help allegedly disappeared under suspicious circumstances.

According to a report filed at the Tourist Police Unit Mtwapa Base yesterday evening, the incident was reported by Esther Wanjira together with her boyfriend, Vandenbussche Bert Julien, a Belgian national.

Police said the tourist had checked into the country on May 26 for a 14 day holiday and was residing at Villa Marina Apartment within Mtwapa township.

The complainants told police that on May 27 a few minutes to noon, they left their residence for shopping at Naivas Supermarket in Mtwapa, leaving behind their house help identified as Leah Mwanyiro, aged 37 years old from Taita County, who was carrying out her routine duties.

Upon returning to the apartment, the tourist reportedly found the residence deserted and attempts to contact the house help proved futile as her mobile phone had been switched off.

Police reports indicate that after inspecting the house, the complainant discovered that the master bedroom had been left unlocked and drawers had been ransacked.

Further checks revealed that cash amounting to 5,000 Euros together with a bunch of keys were missing.

Officers from the Tourist Police Unit Mtwapa Base alongside detectives from the Kilifi South Sub-County Criminal Investigations Office visited the scene and commenced investigations.

Police confirmed that CCTV cameras installed within the residence captured footage considered valuable to the ongoing investigations.

No arrest or recovery has been made so far, with police indicating that investigations are ongoing.
