Pumwani Maternity and Referral Hospital has received medical equipment worth Shs 39 million in a major initiative aimed at reducing maternal and newborn mortality rates in Kenya.
The donation, comprising equipment valued at Shs 26 million from the Rotary District 9212 and Shs 13 million from the Safaricom Foundation, was handed over on Tuesday by Wairimu Njage of Rotary District 9212 and Joe Ogutu of Safaricom Foundation.

The project seeks to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare services by equipping the hospital’s labour ward and newborn unit with critical medical equipment while enhancing the skills of healthcare workers through specialized training.
The training programme is being conducted by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Nairobi to improve the quality of care provided to mothers and newborns.
As part of the intervention, Safaricom Foundation has also installed a new central heating system to support newborns suffering from low body temperatures, a key factor in improving neonatal survival rates.

The medical donations were received by Pumwani Maternity and Referral Hospital Chief Executive Officer Christine Kiteshuo and Nairobi County Chief Officer for Medical Services Mariam Dahir.
The initiative marks a significant milestone in efforts to improve maternal and child health outcomes in Kenya by strengthening healthcare infrastructure and building the capacity of frontline healthcare workers.
