More than 5,000 learners in Starehe Sub-County have received bursaries in a major education support initiative aimed at improving access to learning opportunities and reducing the financial burden on families struggling with the rising cost of living.
The bursaries were distributed through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) under the leadership of Starehe Member of Parliament Amos Mwago Maina.
The initiative is expected to benefit thousands of families across the constituency by enabling students to remain in school and continue pursuing their education without interruptions caused by lack of school fees.
The bursary programme targets students from different educational levels, including secondary schools, colleges, technical institutions, and universities. Education stakeholders, parents, and local leaders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward ensuring that no child is denied access to education because of financial constraints.
Speaking during the bursary distribution exercise held at Landi Mawe Chief’s Camp in the South B area, NG-CDF Fund Manager Daudi Obonyo revealed that the constituency had increased its bursary allocation for the current financial year in response to the growing demand for educational support.
According to Mr. Obonyo, the bursary budget rose from Sh63 million to Sh67 million, reflecting the constituency leadership’s commitment to investing in education as a key pillar of social and economic development.
Mr. Obonyo told Daily Nation that Sh41 million was disbursed to learners in secondary schools, Sh16 million allocated to college students, while Sh10 million was distributed to learners in tertiary institutions and universities.
