Suspected Motorcycle Thief Rescued from Lynching in Joska

A suspected motorcycle thief narrowly escaped death after police rescued him from an angry mob that had set him on fire in Joska, Machakos County today.

According to a police report, the incident was reported at Joska Police Station in the morning by Samuel Mwangi, the chairman of local boda boda operators.

He informed police that a man had been cornered by members of the public and was being subjected to mob justice at Junction area.

A team of police officers led by the Deputy OCS immediately responded and found the suspect already engulfed in flames after a tyre had been lit around him.

Officers managed to extinguish the fire and rescue the man from the crowd.

Police identified the suspect as Wycliffe Wafula, alias “Samanda,” a middle aged man believed to be a well known motorcycle theft suspect in the area.

Preliminary investigations indicate that he had allegedly stolen a motorcycle last year before disappearing.

Residents reportedly recognised him after he resurfaced in the area despite allegedly attempting to conceal his identity.

The suspect sustained a deep head injury and minor burn wounds during the attack.

He was rushed to Ngalalya Dispensary for emergency treatment before being referred to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital for specialised care.

Arrangements were being made to transfer him to the hospital at the time of the report.
