Eight Preachers accused by residents of practicing witchcraft have been rescued by police after an angry mob cornered them in Soweto area, Nyali, Mombasa County.
The incident also left three police officers injured.
According to a report made at Kadzandani Police Station yesterday evening,the incident occurred after two members of the public raised an alarm alleging that their private parts had mysteriously disappeared after being greeted by the suspects.
The eight individuals who are members of Jehovah’s Witnesses were identified as Joseph Mwakio (42), Samuel Masae (70), Eric Katetea (51), Juma Ngala (56), Marico Ikanga (22), Kennedy Marara (52), Brian Mwangi (23), and Sunday Ngala (24)
They were cornered by a hostile crowd at Soweto area.
Police officers from Kadzandani Police Station responded to the scene in an attempt to rescue the group but were overwhelmed by the growing mob.
Reinforcements were later dispatched from Lebanon Team, Nyali Police Station, Mjambere Police Station and Bamburi Police Station.
The reinforcement team managed to disperse the crowd after firing warning shots into the air and lobbying teargas at them.
Several officers discharged rounds and teargas canisters to restore order and facilitate the rescue operation.
During the confrontation, three officers sustained injuries after being pelted with stones by the mob. Corporal Jefferson Elijah suffered injuries to his back and right hand, while Police Constable Samuel Ruto sustained a head injury.
Another officer,Constable Yego of Nyali Police Station, suffered injuries to his right elbow.
Ruto was treated at Bullo Medical Centre and later discharged in stable condition.
The rescued individuals were taken into protective custody at Nyali Police Station as investigations commenced.
Preliminary investigations established that the suspects were not involved in witchcraft as alleged.
Police determined that they were followers of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Church who had been conducting door-to-door evangelism in the area when the accusations arose.
Two suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
No member of the public was reported injured during the melee.
