A police officer was injured, a police vehicle damaged, and a suspect’s house was set ablaze yesterday by mourners who were on a retaliatory mission at Amoni Village in Teso South,Busia County.
According to a police report recorded at Adungosi Police Station,officers had been deployed to guard the home of a suspect known by the alias “Landi,” who had been linked to the death of Leonard Omollo, a victim of mob injustice reported earlier.
The officers were acting on intelligence indicating that mourners planned to carry out a retaliatory arson attack on the suspect’s home.
At about 4:00 p.m., a group of approximately 500 mourners arriving from Alupe Mortuary to the deceased’s home allegedly descended on the officers guarding the residence and began pelting them with stones.
Police said the OCS Adungosi attempted to engage the crowd and order them to disperse, but the mourners defied the instructions and continued attacking officers. T
he officers subsequently used force to defend themselves and restore order.
During the confrontation, Police Constable Vincent Oluoch sustained injuries to his left leg.
A police Land Cruiser was also extensively damaged including a shattered front windscreen and a damaged right side mirror.
Despite the police presence, the rowdy crowd set the suspect’s two-bedroom permanent house on fire.
Efforts by officers to extinguish the blaze were unsuccessful due to the hostile environment created by the attackers.
Reinforcements led by the Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC), officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Teso South, and the OCS Busia later arrived at the scene and managed to contain the unrest.
The injured officer was rushed to Bulanda Hospital, where he received treatment and was discharged in stable condition.
Security agencies have since intensified patrols in the area, which was reported calm following the intervention. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
