Hundreds of boda boda riders allegedly on a revenge mission caused chaos along Ngong Road in Nairobi on Saturday, disrupting traffic, looting businesses and clashing with police before they were dispersed.
The unrest followed Friday’s mob injustice incident in which two suspected motorcycle thieves died after being attacked by members of the public.
The riders had earlier stormed Kenyatta National Hospital demanding immediate treatment for the two men, who later succumbed to their injuries.
According to police, about 300 boda boda riders, many carrying pillion passengers and reportedly armed with crude weapons, knives and pangas, returned to the hospital at around noon demanding the release of the bodies of their deceased colleagues.
Hospital authorities declined the request, prompting the group to leave and stage protests.
The protesters blocked Ngong Road, causing major traffic disruption before police dispersed them.
The group later regrouped near Marspark Hotel in the Jamhuri area, where they looted businesses and terrorised members of the public, forcing police to call in reinforcement from Quick Response Unit (QRU) teams.
Police used tear gas to restore order and fired warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd.
During the operation, two civilians were injured.
A 42 year old woman sustained a gunshot wound to her right leg, while a 22 year old man was struck by a rubber bullet on his left upper arm.
Both were rushed to Nairobi Women’s Hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition.
Police arrested two suspects and detained 10 motorcycles believed to have been used during the disturbances.
Security officers remained deployed in the area as investigations continued.
