Police in Nyandarua County have launched investigations after several residents who have openly campaigned for the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party in next week Thursday Olkalou by-election received anonymous threatening leaflets warning them to stop their political activities.
The incident was reported at Ngorika Police Station in Mirangine Sub-County yesterday by five people all residents of Ngorika.
According to the police report they discovered red leaflets bearing the names of the five individuals.
The leaflets, written in the local language, warned them against what the authors described as “betraying their ommunity” and claimed to know the victims, their children and their homes.
The message further warned that they should not say they had not been warned.
The anonymous authors, who signed off as the “Army of the local Community”, also invoked religious language, claiming to serve the “God of the local community” and issuing what appeared to be death threats.
The complainants told police they believe the threatening messages targeted them because of their open support and campaigns for the UDA party ahead of the by-election.
Police have assured the five residents of their security while investigations commenced.
The recovered leaflets have been handed over to DCI officers in Mirangine for forensic examination and further investigations as detectives work to establish those responsible for producing and distributing the threatening leaflets.
