Two men, including a police officer currently on interdiction, have been arrested after a vehicle they were travelling in was involved in an accident during a chase by boda boda riders in Pakawa, Gilgil, Nakuru County.
The incident occurred on Monday evening in the Fauna area after the four men, who were travelling in a white Toyota Axio registration number KCW 198N, were spotted by members of the public in Kiondoo.
According to a police report, the men were suspected of obtaining money from residents while allegedly posing as police officers, prompting boda boda riders and other members of the public to pursue them.
During the chase, the vehicle reportedly suffered a tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control before it was involved in an accident.
The four occupants allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
Two managed to escape, while the other two were apprehended by members of the public and subjected to mob assault before police officers arrived at the scene.
Officers led by the Officer Commanding Pakawa Police Post, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Gilgil and scenes-of-crime personnel, visited the scene and commenced investigations.
Preliminary investigations identified one of the suspects as Police Constable Brian Wesonga, 33, an officer attached to Nakuru Central Police Station and currently on interdiction.
The second suspect was identified as John Mugo Gachaya, 49.
Wesonga reportedly complained of head pain, while Gachaya sustained injuries to his head, back and knees during the mob assault.
The two suspects, together with the motor vehicle, were taken to Pakawa Police Post for further interrogation as investigations into the alleged extortion and impersonation continued.
