Police in Dadaab, Garissa County, have recovered a suspected homemade gun after a group of more than two men intercepted motorists and robbed members of the public along the Dagahaley-Mathangisi road.
The incident was reported on Monday after Mathangisi Location Assistant Chief Mohamed Abdi Hussein received a tip off from members of the public at around 6am that suspected armed robbers were operating along the road.
The senior assistant chief, accompanied by National Police Reservists (NPRs), rushed to the area.
Upon arrival, the suspects reportedly fled into a nearby bush, abandoning a suspected black wooden homemade gun.
The NPR officers conducted an operation to clear the area, during which three officers fired rounds of ammunition from their AK-47 rifles.
One officer did not fire any ammunition.
The recovered homemade firearm was escorted to Dadaab Police Station by the assistant chief and the NPR officers and handed over to the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) for safe custody.
Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Dadaab handling the case.
Further developments are expected as efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects continue.
