Residents of Githuthye in Fafi, Garissa County, staged a demonstration at Githuthye Police Post protesting an ongoing registration exercise for identity cards on Monday.
The residents demanded that the exercise be stopped, claiming that some of those being registered were not residents and alleging that the exercise could have been influenced by local political considerations.
The protesters first presented a petition at the office of the Fafi Sub-County Commander before proceeding to the police post, where tensions escalated as some reportedly attempted to pull down the gate to gain access to the facility.
The Sub-County Commander promptly deployed additional officers to reinforce security at the post and prevent the protesters from accessing the facility.
Following consultations with members of the District Security Intelligence Committee (DSIC), authorities resolved to suspend the registration exercise pending further consultations and directives.
The exercise, which was scheduled to run until 2pm, was stopped at about 1pm. Attempts by authorities to explain that the registration was being conducted at the police post because of prevailing security challenges failed to calm the protesters.
The exercise will remain suspended pending further consultations and guidance from relevant authorities.
