Mukuru Kayaba Chief in Nairobi Edwin Murunga was on Saturday injured after youths pelted him with stones while protesting the marking of structures earmarked for demolition to create access roads.
Murunga said the youths were armed with pangas and knives, forcing him and members of the Nyumba Kumi team to flee.
The exercise he said targets structures built on designated access routes to allow ambulances, fire engines and police vehicles to reach the densely populated settlement.
Starehe Deputy County Commissioner John Kisang defended the exercise, saying access roads were essential for emergency response.
Kisang cited a recent fire in Dallas, Kambi Moto, where a 23 year old man reportedly died after emergency responders were unable to reach the scene effectively.
Authorities have urged residents to cooperate with the exercise and resolve any disputes peacefully.
