Anita Among’s Rise and Fall: From Village Girl to Uganda’s Powerful Speaker as Raids, Corruption Claims and Political Betrayal Close In

By Our Reporter,Kampala

The once untouchable political empire of former Ugandan Speaker of Parliament Anita Among is now crumbling under the weight of corruption investigations, political betrayal and public humiliation after heavily armed security operatives raided her homes in Kampala and Wakiso.

The detectives also seized her luxury vehicles believed to have been acquired through proceeds of corruption as intensified investigations into her wealth moves on.

From eye witnesses, yesterday’s dramatic operation, carried out by joint security agencies, saw police and intelligence officers surround her upscale residences, confiscate documents and electronic devices and tow away luxury cars, including a Rolls Royce Cullinan and high end Range Rovers, in scenes that stunned the nation and symbolized the spectacular downfall of one of Uganda’s most powerful women.

For a politician who only a few years ago commanded enormous influence in both Parliament and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), the raids marked a shocking reversal of fortune.

Once considered a trusted ally of President Yoweri Museveni and one of the most feared figures in Ugandan politics, Among now finds herself battling allegations of corruption, abuse of office, illicit wealth accumulation and money laundering while facing growing isolation within the same political establishment that elevated her to power.

Anita who was born on November 23, 1973, in Bukedea District in eastern Uganda rose from humble beginnings in the Teso sub region to becoming one of the most recognizable political figures in the country.

Trained in business administration, accounting and law, she studied at Makerere University before later obtaining legal qualifications from Kampala International University.

Her early career was built in accounting, finance and administration in both private business and public institutions, where she gained experience managing finances and institutional operations, skills that later helped shape her image as a disciplined and ambitious technocrat.

Her entry into politics came through grassroots mobilization in eastern Uganda where she became active in local political structures before joining the NRM.

Political observers say her rise was heavily influenced by senior ruling party figures who identified her as a fierce mobilizer capable of strengthening the party’s influence in the Teso region.

In 2016, she contested for the Bukedea District Woman MP seat under the NRM ticket and won convincingly, quickly earning national attention because of her aggressive debating style, unwavering loyalty to government positions and ability to dominate parliamentary discussions.

Her political rise became meteoric.

In 2021, she was elected Deputy Speaker of Parliament, defeating opposition backed candidates and positioning herself among the most influential politicians in the country.

Following the death of Speaker Jacob Oulanyah in 2022, Among rapidly consolidated support within the NRM caucus and Parliament and was elected Speaker, becoming one of the most powerful women in Uganda’s history.

Her victory was widely viewed as a sign of strong backing from powerful NRM insiders and perceived confidence from President Museveni himself.

At the peak of her influence, Among became a central figure in Uganda’s political establishment.

She was seen as fiercely loyal to Museveni and deeply influential within the ruling party, eventually rising to become the NRM’s second national vice chairperson.

Her leadership style was bold, combative and unapologetic.

She gained international attention after presiding over the passage of Uganda’s Anti Homosexuality Act, strongly defending the controversial legislation against criticism from Western governments and human rights organizations.

Her fiery public remarks and refusal to bow to foreign pressure made her popular among conservative supporters while drawing condemnation internationally.

But as her power and visibility increased, so did scrutiny of her lifestyle and wealth.

Questions emerged about extravagant parliamentary spending, luxury acquisitions and allegations of misuse of public resources during her tenure as Speaker.

The scandal involving iron sheets meant for vulnerable communities in Karamoja further damaged her reputation after allegations surfaced that some senior officials, including Among, benefited from diverted government supplies.

Though she repeatedly denied wrongdoing and insisted she was being politically targeted, the controversy fueled public anger and intensified pressure from anti-corruption activists.

The situation worsened when online activists launched campaigns accusing Parliament under her leadership of becoming a center of corruption and excess.

Protesters demanded accountability while opposition politicians accused her of presiding over institutionalized abuse of public funds.

International pressure soon followed.

The United Kingdom and the United States imposed sanctions on Among and her husband, Moses Magogo, citing alleged corruption and human rights concerns, a move that deeply embarrassed Uganda’s political establishment and weakened her standing abroad.

Behind the scenes, reports began emerging that influential figures within the NRM had become increasingly uncomfortable with her growing power, flamboyant lifestyle and perceived political ambitions.

Analysts argued that she had become too visible, too outspoken and too politically exposed.

Rumors spread that powerful actors inside the ruling establishment had quietly begun plotting her removal from the speakership and dismantling her influence within Parliament and the party hierarchy.

The raids on her homes appear to have confirmed fears that her relationship with the establishment has deteriorated badly.

Security agencies now claim they are investigating suspicious wealth accumulation and alleged proceeds of corruption linked to parliamentary expenditures and abuse of office.

Images of armed police officers searching her residences and towing away luxury vehicles have dominated political discussion across Uganda, replacing the once powerful image of a Speaker commanding Parliament with that of a politician fighting for political survival.

Yet despite the scandals surrounding her name, Anita Among’s rise remains historically significant for many Ugandan women.

Coming from a rural background in eastern Uganda, she shattered barriers in a male dominated political environment and inspired many young women who saw her as proof that women could rise to the highest levels of power.

Her confidence, visibility and control over national politics encouraged many aspiring female leaders, particularly in regions where women rarely occupied top government positions.

Today, however, her story has become one of both triumph and tragedy, the story of a woman who rose from rural Bukedea to the highest office in Parliament, became one of the most influential figures in Uganda, stood close to the center of state power and is now facing the greatest political and personal tribulations of her life as corruption allegations, international sanctions, political betrayal and public outrage threaten to destroy the empire she built.
