“And receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.”— 1 John 3:22
At first glance, this verse can feel like a transactional formula: obey God, and He becomes a vending machine for your requests. But John is pointing to something much deeper than a spiritual trade-off. He is describing a heart in perfect alignment.
When we intentionally walk in God’s ways and seek what pleases Him, our desires naturally begin to shift. We stop asking for things born out of selfishness or pride, and we start asking for things that mirror His heart—justice, love, healing, and peace.
Answered prayer isn’t about bending God’s will to match our plans; it’s about our lives being so closely connected to Him that His desires become our own. When your heart beats in rhythm with His, your prayers will naturally align with His perfect purposes.
Take a look at your current prayer list. Choose your biggest request and ask yourself: “How does this align with what pleases God?” Reframe that prayer today to focus not just on the outcome you want, but on how God can be glorified through it.
