Jonathan Mueke: A technocrat, public servant and entrepreneur

Jonathan Mwangangi Mueke is the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Livestock Development under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.

Before joining the national government, Mueke served as the Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County from 2013 to 2017 under former Governor Dr. Evans Kidero.

In 2022, he contested for the Kitui Gubernatorial seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket but lost to the incumbent Governor, Dr. Julius Malombe.

Earlier, in 2007, he unsuccessfully vied for the Westlands parliamentary seat.

Mueke was born on November 4, 1976 in a family of six children.

His parents are Frank Mueke, a medical doctor, and Juliana Mueke, a nurse.

He received his primary education at Kilimani Primary School in Nairobi before joining the prestigious Nairobi School for his secondary education.

He later moved to the United States, where he pursued higher education.

Mueke earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, with a minor in Business Administration, from Wayne State University.

He also holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration, Global Information Technology and Entrepreneurship from Oakland University in Michigan.

During his stay in the United States, Mueke built an impressive career in the technology sector.

He worked as a Systems Administrator at Wayne State University, a Y2K Systems Developer at K-Mart Corporation, a Project Manager at DaimlerChrysler Corporation, and a Technology Services Manager at Fiserv Incorporated.

As Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Mueke oversees seven state corporations and provides strategic leadership in livestock policy management, veterinary services and disease control, livestock marketing, research and training, as well as animal genetic development.

In the early years of President William Ruto’s administration, Mueke served as Principal Secretary for Sports.

During his tenure, groundwork was laid for the development of world class sports infrastructure and Kenya’s preparations to host major continental tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Beyond public service, Mueke is passionate about youth empowerment and community development.

In a previous interview with DNK-International, he said he derives satisfaction from mentoring young people and giving back to society.

He serves as a leadership mentor for participants in the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, a flagship programme under the United States Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).

However some of people who know him alleged that he’s a man who forgot many of peers,friends and people who helped him to succeed politically and professionally.

They complained he’s inaccessible to them and allegedly dismisses them and doesn’t pick their calls or return text messages.

He was however unavailable to comment on this claims.

Mueke is also the champion of the “Ficha Uchi Initiative,” a programme that has restored dignity to more than 10,000 children from disadvantaged backgrounds by providing scholarships and essential educational support.

An accomplished entrepreneur, Mueke has investments in the real estate and technology sectors and remains actively involved in community development projects across Kenya.

Mueke is married and has two children.
