It is one of the most jarring lines in Scripture. Job has lost his wealth, his children, and now his health, sitting in ashes scraping his sores. In that rock-bottom moment, the person closest to him offers a counsel of despair.
We often judge Job’s wife harshly, but her words expose a raw, human reality: intense pain fractures our faith. It is easy to praise God when life is comfortable. The true test of our integrity—and our relationships—happens in the fire. She saw no way out but surrender to bitterness; Job, however, chose to hold fast.
When suffering hits, it creates a fork in the road. We can let bitterness drive us to push God away, or let our brokenness drive us to cling to Him tighter. Today, if you are hurting, bring your raw pain to God, but refuse to let go of your trust in Him.
