Boniface Ngairah Ambani has cemented his place among Kenya’s respected football personalities after overseeing AFC Leopards Soccer Club “Ingwe” finish second place in the FKF Premier League behind Archrivals GorMahia Football Club “Kogalo”.
The club’s remarkable achievement guided by Ambani and his elder brother Fred Ambani saw the team players and officials hosted by President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi on Wednesday in recognition of their impressive results.
GorMahia team and its top management in the recent past too were hosted by President Ruto at State House for a luncheon and recognition.
Ambani who is in his 40’s was born in Naivasha and grew up in a football loving family.
His father, Ernest Ambani, was an amateur footballer and military officer, while his brother, Fred, also became a renowned footballer before venturing into coaching.
In a previous talk with your favourite online publication DNK-International,Ambani acknowledged that watching his elder brother play inspired him to pursue football from an early age.
He attended Shikondi Primary School before joining Makhokho Secondary School in Kakamega County.
Ambani later enrolled at the Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology, where he studied Accounts and graduated with a Diploma in Accounting.
Despite his academic training, football soon became his full time profession after his outstanding talent was spotted while playing in Eldoret.
Ambani recalled that a visit to his brother in Eldoret changed his life when AFC Leopards scouts noticed his striking ability and recruited him in 1998.
He began playing competitive football as a teenager and quickly established himself as one of Kenya’s deadliest strikers.
His local club career included stint with AFC Leopards, Oserian FC, Kenya Pipeline, and Tusker FC, where he reached the peak of his career.
In 2006, he won the Kenyan Premier League Golden Boot after scoring 20 league goals, attracting interest from clubs outside Kenya.
His professional career took him abroad, where he featured for India’s East Bengal Club and Sporting Clube de Goa, before moving to Tanzania’s Young Africans (Yanga SC).
At international level, Ambani represented Harambee Stars between 1998 and 2009, earning 12 caps and scoring five goals.
He was part of Kenya’s squad during the country’s memorable qualification for the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
Among his notable achievements are winning the 1998 Kenyan Premier League title with AFC Leopards, the 2006 Premier League Golden Boot, and earning recognition as one of Kenya’s most prolific strikers of his generation.
Ambani’s playing career was cut short in 2010 after suffering a serious Achilles tendon injury, forcing him to retire at just 27 years of age.
Rather than walk away from football, he immediately shifted his focus to nurturing young talent through coaching.
His transition into coaching was influenced largely by his passion for player development and the mentorship of experienced football figures, including his brother Fred.
He began coaching Kangemi All Stars before taking charge of the AFC Leopards Youth Team, where he helped develop several players who later progressed to professional football, including Austin Odhiambo and Richard Odada.
He also guided the youth side to victories in the Nairobi West Branch League and the Jamhuri Day Cup.
Away from football, Ambani is also an entrepreneur and serves as the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bochend General Merchants, a company dealing in sports equipment and kits.
In June 2025, he was elected Chairman of AFC Leopards, promising to restore the club’s lost glory through professionalism, financial accountability and stronger youth structures.
He took over from Dan Shikanda also a former club Chairman.
His campaign slogan, “Take Back the Club,” resonated strongly with supporters, while one of his memorable remarks after his election was: “We are not just changing leadership; we are reclaiming our pride.”
Although Ambani keeps his private life largely away from the public eye, he is married and is widely regarded as a family man who prefers to let his football achievements speak louder than his personal affairs.
Chairman Boniface Ambani remains one of Kenya’s most influential football figures,a former lethal striker, national team hero, youth mentor, coach, football administrator and entrepreneur whose journey from the pitch to the boardroom continues to inspire the next generation of Kenyan footballers.
