A middle-aged woman arrested in Mombasa for allegedly posting information on her X account about President William Ruto’s movements during his visit to Europe has been released following a court order.
Halima Haji secured her release after the High Court issued orders in response to an application filed by her lawyer, Ian Mutiso, who argued that her arrest and detention were illegal and unlawful.
According to Mutiso, Haji was arrested in Mombasa on July 1, 2026, before being transferred to Nairobi and arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts. Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had sought orders to detain her for seven days to facilitate investigations.
However, the trial magistrate granted the investigators only three days to hold her at Pangani Police Station.
In the application before Justice Alexander Muteti, the defence argued that law enforcement officers violated Haji’s constitutional rights by arresting her and conducting a search of her residence without obtaining a court-issued search warrant. The lawyer also challenged the seizure of her electronic devices, describing the actions as unlawful.
Justice Muteti ordered that Haji be released by 5 p.m. on Friday. The judge is expected to deliver a ruling on the application on Monday.
The case stems from allegations that Haji shared information on her X account concerning President Ruto’s movements while he was in Europe.
