Former Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) senior executive, Engineer Vincent Esyepet Sidai aged 52 has emerged as one of the leading contenders in the race to unseat Busia Governor Paul Otuoma in the 2027 General Election.
Sidai is banking on his extensive experience in infrastructure development, public service management and grassroots mobilization to convince voters that he offers a better alternative for the county’s future.

Sidai, a professional engineer and corporate executive, built his reputation at the Kenya Ports Authority where he rose through the ranks to hold several senior positions, including General Manager for Infrastructure Development and later General Manager of Lamu Port.
He was also among the candidates shortlisted for the position of KPA Managing Director in 2023, highlighting the confidence the maritime sector had in his leadership abilities.

Before leaving the port authority to focus on politics, Sidai was recognized for overseeing major infrastructure projects and port development initiatives.
During his tenure as General Manager for Infrastructure Development, KPA undertook several expansion projects aimed at improving maritime transport and trade.
He was also associated with initiatives to develop fishing and transport ports along the Kenyan coastline and Lake Victoria region.
Sidai is regarded as a seasoned engineer with decades of experience in public infrastructure management.
His academic background is rooted in engineering studies, qualifications that enabled him to rise to top technical and managerial positions within KPA.

He holds a Masters degree in project planning and management from University of Nairobi,a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from JKUAT among other higher qualifications that he has attained
Throughout his career, he has been viewed as a technocrat who prefers data-driven planning and infrastructure led development.
Sidai’s political journey is not new. He first contested the Busia gubernatorial seat in 2013 but lost to former Governor Sospeter Ojaamong.

He later remained active in county politics and was among the aspirants who sought to succeed Ojaamong in the 2022 elections before Governor Otuoma eventually won the seat.
As he prepares for another stab at the governorship, Sidai has positioned himself as the candidate capable of ending what he frequently describes as poor leadership and underdevelopment in Busia.
He told DNK-International that his experience in managing multi-billion shilling infrastructure projects gives him an advantage over career politicians.
In several public forums, he has maintained that Busia requires professional management, efficient resource utilization and accelerated development.
His campaign message revolves around improving infrastructure, creating employment opportunities for youth, enhancing agricultural value chains, promoting trade through Busia’s strategic border location and strengthening service delivery in health and education sectors.

He has repeatedly promised to unite all communities in the county and run an inclusive administration if elected governor.
The Iteso community which is his community is one of the largest voting blocs in Busia County and remains central to Sidai’s political calculations.
As a prominent Iteso leader, he enjoys significant support within the community, although his candidacy has at times sparked calls for a single Iteso candidate to challenge Otuoma.

Sidai has consistently rejected tribal politics, insisting that Busia voters should elect leaders based on competence rather than ethnicity.
He often points to previous elections as evidence that county residents vote beyond tribal considerations.
Beyond politics, Sidai has been involved in community empowerment activities, youth and women’s initiatives, fundraising events and development mobilization programs across Busia County.
His supporters portray him as a development oriented leader whose technical expertise can help unlock the county’s economic potential.
Sidai sits on a number of boards committees with some chairing them among them Member,Board of Directors of the National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation,Joint Secretary,National Concrete Pavements Steering Committee-Kenya,Chairman Board of management St.Mark ACK Machakusi Secondary school and Chairman Board of Management Moding Secondary School.
Among his memorable political statements is his declaration that he is the only candidate capable of defeating Governor Otuoma in 2027.
He has also repeatedly emphasized that leadership should transcend tribal and political affiliations, stating that Busia residents elect leaders based on merit rather than ethnicity.
During recent political engagements, he launched the “Sidai Mashinani” strategy aimed at reaching every ward and household across the county through grassroots engagement.
With a background that combines engineering expertise, public sector management and years of political involvement, Sidai is seeking to present himself as a technocratic reformer determined to transform Busia through infrastructure development, economic growth and inclusive governance.
