GBV WATCH:Mother Dies by Suicide After Setting House Ablaze, Two Children Killed

A family dispute turned tragic in Homa Bay County after a 31 year old woman locked her four children inside their house, set it on fire, and later died by suicide.

The incident left two children dead and two others fighting for their lives.

According to police,the incident occurred in Kon’gonge Village, Kayoo West Sub Location in Rachuonyo North SubCounty on Sunday.

The matter was reported by Kayoo West Assistant Chief Alfred Mbala, prompting officers from Got Oyaro and Kendu Bay police stations, alongside detectives from the DCI to visit the scene.

Investigators established that the deceased, identified as Veronica Anyango locked her four children inside their house before setting it ablaze.

She was later found dead after hanging herself from a tree outside the homestead.

Two children, Sheila Keila Okoth, aged two, and one year old Maxdaling Abiero, perished in the fire and were burnt beyond recognition.

Two other children, Ruth Angel Okoth, aged seven, and five year old Jeff Obiero, survived after a neighbour, Millicent Ochieng, reportedly heard their screams, forced entry into the house and rescued them.

The injured children were rushed to Kandiege Sub County Referral Hospital for treatment.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased had allegedly been involved in a domestic dispute with her husband, Charles Obiero, over claims of an extramarital affair.

Crime scene investigators documented and photographed the scene as detectives launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The bodies of the deceased woman and the two children were moved to the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examinations.

Police said investigations are ongoing, with detectives from Rachuonyo North leading the probe into the incident.
