A Kenyan-born woman has made history in the United Kingdom after becoming the first Black Mayor of Dunstable, a market town in Bedfordshire.
Sally Kimondo was elected Mayor in May 2025, barely a year after securing the Dunstable East council seat with 372 votes. Her election marks a historic milestone for the town and is being celebrated as a proud achievement for the Kenyan diaspora in the UK.
Before joining politics, Kimondo built a distinguished career as a senior social worker, where she supported vulnerable families and championed community development. She is also the founder of the award-winning Luton, Dunstable and Surrounding Kenya Community Forum, an organisation that brings together Kenyans living in the UK through mentorship programmes, cultural events and community support initiatives.
Originally from Kenya, Kimondo has maintained strong ties to her homeland while dedicating herself to public service in the United Kingdom.
As Mayor of Dunstable, she presides over civic functions, supports charitable causes and advocates for diversity, inclusion and stronger community engagement.
Her remarkable rise from Kenya to one of the highest civic offices in Dunstable is inspiring many Kenyans living abroad and highlights the growing influence of the Kenyan diaspora in leadership and public service across the world.
