Kenyans Question Boniface Mwangi’s Absence Ahead of June 25 Gen Z Memorial Protests

Kenyans on social media have questioned the absence of activist Boniface Mwangi from the country in the lead-up to the planned Gen Z memorial protests scheduled for June 25, 2026.

Mwangi, a prominent human rights activist and one of the vocal advocates for justice for victims of the 2024 and 2025 anti-government protests, has been urging Kenyans to participate in the nationwide demonstrations set to commemorate those who lost their lives during the protests.

In a Facebook post published on June 18, 2026, Mwangi announced that he had joined families of the victims in formally notifying the Inspector General of Police about the planned peaceful protests.

“Today, we walked with the families of the heroes who were killed during the June 2024–25 peaceful protests. We formally notified the Inspector General of Police of nationwide peaceful protests and a national holiday next week to honour our fallen heroes,” he wrote.

He further called on Kenyans to turn out in large numbers on June 25.

“On June 25th, let us come together to honour our Gen Z heroes, stand with their families, and demand justice and accountability. Never again should parents bury their child for daring to dream of a better Kenya. No work. No school. We remember. We mourn. We demand justice,” the post read.

However, days before the planned demonstrations, photos and reports circulating online appeared to show Mwangi attending a journalism-related event in Germany, prompting criticism from some Kenyans who questioned why he was not in the country ahead of the protests he has been championing.

A section of social media users accused the activist of inconsistency, arguing that leaders of the movement should be physically present to participate in the activities they are mobilizing others to attend.
