A 34 year old man is recovering in hospital after armed robbers forced him to swallow a four inch nail during a robbery near Madogo in Tana River County.
The victim, identified as Daniel Musyoka Martha, was admitted to Garissa Level Five Teaching and Referral Hospital after experiencing abdominal pain several days after the incident.
According to a police report, the incident occurred on October 26, 2026, at around 9pm as Musyoka was walking home to Adele Phase II from Garissa town.
Upon reaching the graveyard near Madogo Muslim Polytechnic, he encountered four unidentified men armed with machetes and whose faces were concealed using hoods.
The gang robbed him of Sh420 and four sticks of Supermatch cigarettes before forcing him to choose between being hacked with machetes or swallowing a four-inch nail.
Fearing for his life, Musyoka opted to swallow the nail, after which the attackers released him.
He reportedly bought salad oil from a nearby shop and swallowed it in an attempt to help the nail pass through his digestive system.
The victim did not immediately report the incident to police and instead proceeded to work in Garissa early the following morning.
However, on October 29, he developed lower abdominal pain and sought medical attention at Garissa Level Five Hospital.
An X-ray examination revealed that the nail was inside his alimentary canal and was gradually moving towards the anus for expulsion.
Police officers from Bangale Sub-County, led by the SCCIO and the OCS Madogo, visited the victim in hospital following reports circulating on social media about the bizarre robbery.
He remains admitted and is under close medical observation as police investigate the incident.
The case is being handled by the Bangale Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
