A 17 year old student at Maseno National school has died from a gunshot wound in what police are investigating as a suspected suicide after taking his father’s police firearm from their home in Homa Bay County.

According to a police incident report, the tragedy occurred early on Monday at the basketball pitch of Mawego National Polytechnic in Rachuonyo North.

The deceased, identified as Terryken Juma Odhiambo, a Form Four student at Maseno National School, was found lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police officers from Kendu Bay Police Station and detectives from the DCI processed the scene.

Investigators recovered a Ceska pistol loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition and an Oppo mobile phone belonging to the OCS Subwiga Police Station, Chief Inspector John Odhiambo Juma, who is the deceased’s father.

The firearm was found beside the student’s body.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the teenager entered his father’s bedroom while the officer was in the bathroom and left with both his pistol and the mobile phone.

A gunshot was later heard from the neighbourhood, prompting the discovery of the body.

Police further stated that the deceased had reportedly been involved in a disagreement with his parents over a mobile phone that had been confiscated, and investigators are examining whether the dispute may have contributed to the incident.

The body was moved to Rachuonyo South Mortuary pending a post mortem examination.

An inquest file has been opened, and detectives from DCI Rachuonyo North have commenced investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.
