The ODM Youth Convention held in Busia on Sunday resolved that the party now part of the broad based government arrangement, should settle for nothing less than the presidency or the deputy presidency in the next General Election.
The convention was attended by the party’s Deputy Leader, Simba Arati, National Chairperson Gladys Wanga, Secretary General Catherine Omanyo,Governors Ferdinand Barasa (Kakamega) and the host, Paul Otuoma, among other senior party officials.
However, the meeting was notably boycotted by party leader Oburu Oginga.
Intelligence reports indicated that his absence was prompted by threats from a group of youths identifying themselves as the “Busia Jobless,” who had allegedly planned to disrupt the convention over their dissatisfaction with Governor Otuoma’s leadership.
Later in the day, photographs circulated on social media showing Oburu alongside his sister, Ruth Odinga, inspecting a government housing project in Kisumu, fueling speculation that the party leader had opted to stay away from the Busia event amid the reported security concerns.
The convention’s resolution is expected to intensify debate within ODM over the party’s political strategy and bargaining position ahead of the next General Election.
