Police in Rabai, Kilifi County, have launched investigations after a 61 year old retired port officer was lynched and burned to death by a mob over allegations of witchcraft.
According to a police report, the incident was reported at Rabai Police Station by Mwatsuga Sub-Location Assistant Chief Jonathan Kunje.
The attack occurred at Mwatsuga Village.
Police officers and detectives from the DCI visited the scene and established that the victim, identified as James Mvaya, a resident of Rabai who was reportedly mentally disturbed, had allegedly been transported to the village by boda boda riders from Bwagamoya Sub Location after being accused of practising witchcraft.
The report states that an angry mob turned on the man, attacking him with sticks and stones before setting him ablaze using an old mattress.
He died at the scene after suffering severe burn injuries.
Crime scene investigators processed and documented the area before the partially burnt body was moved to the Coast General Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
No arrests have been made, and detectives from DCI Rabai have commenced investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.
The incident highlights the continued challenge of mob justice and attacks linked to witchcraft allegations in parts of the country, with authorities urging members of the public to report suspected offences to law enforcement instead of taking the law into their own hands.
