Police officers in Kuria East, Migori County, fired at a suspect armed with a panga who allegedly attempted to attack them during an operation to arrest suspects wanted over a case of threatening to kill.
The dramatic incident occurred on Tuesday evening at Sakura village.
According to a police report, officers proceeded to the area at about 7pm to effect arrests in connection with a threatening to kill case reported to them.
During the operation, one of the suspects armed himself with a panga attempted to strike a Police Constable on the head.
The officer reportedly blocked the attack using his AK-47 rifle.
The panga struck the firearm, damaging its wooden body and gas tube.
The suspect is said to have then advanced towards another officer, prompting another officer to fire two rounds into the air as warning shots.
The other officer fired one round to disable the suspect, who dropped the panga and fled into the darkness.
The other two suspects were arrested and escorted to Kegonga Police Station.
Police recovered the panga, which was booked as an exhibit, while officers launched a manhunt for the suspect who escaped.
The two arrested suspects were expected to be arraigned in court on Wednesday as police continue efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
