Mob lynches suspected motorcycle thief in Kirinyaga

A middle aged man suspected of stealing a motorcycle has been lynched and his body burnt beyond recognition by members of the public in Ndurumo Kenda area, Kirinyaga County.

The incident was reported at Kiandegwa Police Post under Ciagini Police Station on Tuesday night by Rurii Sub-location Assistant Chief Esbon Githinji.

According to police, the administrator received information that a suspected motorcycle thief had been attacked by members of the public.

Police officers from. Mwea West rushed to the scene, where they found the body of the man, who had only been identified as Kariuki, lying at the scene after being set ablaze.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased and another suspect allegedly stole a motorcycle in the Argtech area near Mutithi Market before being pursued by boda boda riders.

The second suspect reportedly managed to escape, while the deceased was allegedly caught at Piaia Market.

The riders are said to have taken him to Ndurumo Kenda area, where he was attacked and lynched before his body was set on fire.

The deceased’s remains, which had been burnt beyond recognition, were removed from the scene and taken to Kerugoya Level 5 Hospital mortuary, where they are being preserved pending postmortem and formal identification.

Detectives from DCI Mwea West are investigating the incident and efforts are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those involved.
