A remand prisoner escaped from lawful custody at Githunguri Police Station in Kiambu County after allegedly assaulting police officers during a prisoner’s handover exercise.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Monday when officers were counting prisoners ahead of a handover, according to a police incident report.
The report indicates that remandee Kelvin Ruto Yegon attacked Police Constable Kelvin Murimi, hitting him in the eye, before other inmates charged towards the officers.
In the ensuing commotion, Police Constable Faith Ayona, who was handing over report office duties to Police Constable Jacobeth Ruttah, reportedly opened the main cell door in an attempt to rescue the officers.
However, another remand prisoner, identified as Edwin Masika Wamalwa is said to have slapped and kicked Ayona on the left cheek before jumping over the report office grills and escaping from the station.
During the incident, Murimi fired six rounds of ammunition from an AK-47 rifle in an attempt to prevent the prisoner from escaping.
Police said a search had been launched to trace and rearrest the escapee, while the case was pending further investigations.
