President William Ruto is expected to attend the consecration and enthronement of Ven. Dr. Vitalis Job Ekuru as the fourth Bishop of ACK Katakwa Diocese Sunday at Amagoro comprehensive school grounds.
Teso North MP Dr Oku Kaunya also confirmed that Uganda’s Vice President Major (rtd) Jessica Alupo will also attend.
Other dignitaries expected include National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Iteso Cultural Leader Emormor Paul Sande Emolot, Members of Parliament from the Western region, and other invited guests from outside the country.
Dr. Kaunya who was speaking to journalists after inspecting the venue for Sunday’s ceremony, said that while the youths had a democratic right to express themselves and seek legal redress, the court action lacked merit.
“We are grateful that the court quashed the matter. In my view, it was not justified because the election process followed the procedures laid down in the ACK Constitution.
The winning candidate secured the majority of votes, while the second-placed candidate conceded defeat.
He was referring to a petition which had been filed by ten petitioners seeking orders to stop the ceremony.
The MP said the petitioners had no basis and hailed the Busia High Court for dismissing the petition, thereby paving the way for the consecration to proceed as planned.
The MP urged the youth and residents of Teso North to uphold unity and seek guidance from community elders before taking actions that could have long-term consequences.
Kaunya also cautioned political leaders against exploiting unemployed youths for unlawful activities or political confrontations.
“The use of youths for the wrong purposes or to break the law is not the best thing, especially when encouraged by leaders. My appeal to fellow leaders is to stop using goons to execute political agendas. If we have political differences, let us debate ideas and convince the public through sound policies. Many young people are unemployed, and small amounts of money can easily be used to manipulate them, leading to destruction such as the recent incident in Busia. Our youth should make independent decisions when electing leaders of their choice.”
The legislator described the consecration and enthronement of the fourth Bishop of ACK Katakwa Diocese as a historic occasion that extends beyond a church ceremony.
“Katakwa Diocese was born out of a struggle that united the entire community. This event has historical significance because it symbolises not only the growth of the Church but also the unity of our people.”
Kaunya thanked President William Ruto and Uganda’s Vice President Jessica Alupo for accepting the Church’s invitation to attend the ceremony.
He called upon residents of Busia County, churches, and particularly ACK faithful to turn out in large numbers to witness what he termed a landmark event in the history of Katakwa Diocese.
Ven. Dr. Ekuru will be consecrated and enthroned by the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya, His Grace the Most Rev. Dr. Jackson Ole Sapit, during a ceremony at Amagoro Comprehensive School grounds on Sunday, July 26.
Dr. Ekuru succeeds Bishop John Okude whose term ended in February 2026.
