A man aged accused of attempting to rape a 50 year old woman was rescued from an angry mob by police after residents torched his house and attempted to lynch him in Suna West, Migori County.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at Mariba C Village, Wasweta II Sub-location.
According to police, the victim,MAO had gone to fetch water from a nearby river at around 6.30 a.m. and was returning home when she was allegedly attacked from behind by a man she identified as Javan Obaga Enock, also known as Sonko aged 30.
The suspect allegedly covered her face with a sack, wrestled her to the ground and attempted to rape her.
The woman screamed for help and, as the suspect tried to silence her by covering her mouth with his right hand, she bit his fingers, forcing him to abandon the attack and flee.
Police officers led by the Deputy OCS visited the scene and established that enraged residents who had responded to the victim’s distress had already set the suspect’s mud house ablaze.
While documenting the scene, officers received information that the suspect was hiding at a nearby homestead in Kuria West.
However, a hostile crowd had surrounded the area and was demanding his death, claiming he was a repeat offender.
A joint team of officers from Migori Police Station led by Inspector Edwin Nyabuto and personnel from the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) mounted a rescue operation and successfully evacuated the suspect from the mob.
Police fired live rounds, blank ammunition and anti-riot canisters into the air to disperse the crowd.
No injuries were reported during the operation.
The suspect, who had injuries on his right fingers sustained after being bitten by the victim, was arrested and booked at Oruba Police Station.
He was expected to face charges of attempted rape and assault.
The victim was treated at a health facility and discharged in stable condition.
Police have launched investigations into the alleged attempted rape, the arson attack on the suspect’s house and the attempted mob justice.
