A major security operation is underway in Murang’a South after a suspect escaped with a police officer’s firearm following a struggle during an attempted arrest.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at Brooms Village after officers from Wempa Police Post responded to a report that about 15 suspected goons had invaded Mwangalia Farm, assaulted a security guard and stolen eight corrugated iron sheets.
According to police, the suspects allegedly sold the stolen iron sheets to a local scrap metal dealer before fleeing.
Acting on fresh information, officers tracked them to a house where they were reportedly sharing the proceeds from the sale.
As police attempted to arrest the group outside the compound, one suspect allegedly wrestled with Police Constable Simon Momanyi, causing the officer to fall.
During the struggle, his Duma pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, fell to the ground.
The suspect reportedly grabbed the firearm and fled into a nearby thicket.
Officers pursued him and fired three rounds in an attempt to stop him, but he managed to escape with the weapon.
Senior police officers, including the Murang’a South Sub-County Police Commander, the DCIO Murang’a South, the Officer Commanding Kenol Police Station and a team from the Murang’a County Headquarters led by the County Police Commander and County Criminal Investigations Officer, visited the scene and coordinated an intensive search for the suspect.
One suspect, identified as 23 year old Simon Maina Muiruri, was arrested and remains in police custody to assist with investigations.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Murang’a South have launched investigations as the search for the stolen police firearm and the escaped suspect continues.
