Suspected Clothes Thief Seriously Injured in Imenti Central

A man accused of stealing clothes from a students’ apartment in Meru County was seriously injured after he was assaulted by members of the public following his arrest.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening at an apartment in Gatauga Village, Kariene Location, Imenti Central,Meru county.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Evans Mawira from Cheera Village in Chuka, sneaked into the compound and was found stealing clothes hanging on a clothesline used by students from Mukiria Technical Institute.

Police said the suspect attempted to flee after being spotted but was chased by the students before being intercepted by members of the public, who reportedly assaulted him.

The apartment caretaker, Douglas Munene, later reported the incident to Kariene Police Station and escorted the injured suspect to the station together with the students.

Officers rushed the suspect to Kanyakine Sub-County Hospital, where he received first aid treatment.

Police said he sustained serious bodily injuries and remains under medical observation.
