A police officer attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) headquarters has been arrested in Kisii over allegations of stealing a mobile phone from a member of the public using a fake assistance scheme within a police station compound.
According to a police incident report made at Kisii Central Police Station yesterday,Constable Calleb Zablon Murwani, aged 27, was arrested in connection with the theft of an Oppo A3X mobile phone valued at Sh35,000 belonging to Cliff Marube.
Police say the incident under investigation was initially reported on May 12.
It is alleged that on May 12 in the morning,the suspect while dressed in full police jungle uniform,approached the complainant and allegedly lured him into the parking yard of Kisii Central Police Station claiming he worked at the station.
The officer allegedly borrowed the complainant’s phone under the pretext of making a call to his wife before disappearing with it.
Police further reported that the suspect was at the time of the arrest found within the police lines at Kisii Central allegedly attempting to use the same modus operandi on other unsuspecting members of the public, leading to his arrest.
Police recovered a full police jungle uniform from him during the arrest, while the complainant reportedly positively identified the suspect.
However, the stolen mobile phone had not been recovered by the time of filing the report.
Investigations established that the officer is attached to General Service Unit Headquarters “M” Company and is currently serving a suspension.
He remains in police custody and is expected to face charges of stealing contrary to Section 268 as read with Section 275 of the Penal Code.
The case is being investigated by officers from Kisii Central Police Station.
