Tension gripped Samburu Township in Kwale County after police rescued two men accused of allegedly practising witchcraft.
The incident followed claims that a resident’s private parts disappeared after interacting with them.
According to police, the incident began when two men, identified as Kofa Amir Fafi and Athman Chadukani Nyamawi, were accused by members of the public of being involved in witchcraft.
The accusations stemmed from allegations that they greeted a local resident, Tsuma Mwavadu Leli, after which he claimed his private parts had disappeared.
They were cornered by an angry crowd near Rahman Mosque in Samburu Township.
Officers from the station rushed to the scene and rescued the pair from the mob.
However, the situation escalated as police escorted the suspects to the station.
A large crowd reportedly mobilised and followed the officers, nearly overwhelming them upon arrival at the police station while demanding the release of the suspects.
Samburu Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Kilonzo addressed the agitated crowd in an effort to calm tensions, but the mob reportedly remained adamant that the two men be released.
Police subsequently called for reinforcement from Taru Police Station, Mackinnon Police Station and the General Service Unit (GSU) Mackinnon Camp.
The additional security personnel managed to disperse the crowd and restore order.
The two suspects were later escorted to Mariakani Sub-County Hospital, while the complainant, Tsuma Mwavadu Leli, was taken to Samburu Sub-County Hospital for assessment.
