An Uber driver has been commended after he handed over a loaded pistol that was left behind by a passenger in his vehicle in Nairobi’s Pangani area.
According to a police report, the driver, identified as Paul Tichura Gitira, reported that at around 8:00 p.m. on July 20, he responded to a ride request to Pangani.
After the passenger boarded and sat in the rear seat, the client noticed a metallic object resembling a firearm and alerted the driver.
The two immediately drove to Pangani Police Station, where officers examined the object and confirmed it was a Glock pistol loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition and secured inside a black holster.
The driver told police he had only transported two passengers earlier that day to different destinations.
Investigators are expected to establish how the firearm was left inside the vehicle and identify its lawful owner.
The recovered firearm was placed in the station armoury for safe custody as investigations continue.
