Comedian Eric Omondi has been released on a free bond after being charged alongside seven others with allegedly obstructing the movement of motor vehicles on a public road.
Omondi and his co-accused appeared on Tuesday before the Milimani Law Courts following their arrest in Nairobi.
The eight pleaded not guilty to a charge of obstructing the operation of motor vehicles on a road, contrary to Section 58(c) of the Kenya Roads Act, Chapter 403 of the Laws of Kenya.
During the bond hearing, the prosecution argued that the accused should be released on reasonable bail or bond terms to ensure they attend court as required.
Defence lawyers, however, urged the court to release the accused on personal bonds, arguing that the case should not be used to punish them for exercising their constitutional rights.
The defence further submitted that there was no evidence that the accused were flight risks or posed a threat to witnesses.
The court agreed that the prosecution had not raised concerns over the accused failing to attend court or interfering with witnesses.
In considering Omondi’s bond terms, the court noted that he had other matters before the Milimani courts and had consistently attended previous court sessions.
The magistrate said Omondi’s record demonstrated that he was unlikely to abscond and consequently released him on a free bond.
The other seven accused persons, whose previous court attendance records were not available to the court, were each directed to execute a personal bond of Sh2,000.
The parties agreed to return to court for the hearing, with the magistrate indicating that the matter could proceed on September 29, 2026.
